J4P - Warming Up

Here is the audio or video of Shane Claiborne (Author of Jesus For President), Greg Boyd and Chuck Colson having a conversation about faith and politics. All three come from different places and yet, do a good job of having a respectful conversation.

Consider it a warm-up to what is ahead.

  1. very cool “debate” or talk or whatever you want to call it. I’ve watched about 2/3rd of it. Very interesting points made. Now I”m even more confused…can you be in the middle of all 3???? or is that cop out?

  2. I listened to J4P - Warming Up which led me to Greg Boyd’s blog on war and violence. I would agree that violence was never apart of the Garden, never apart of the world as God intended. I guess I am having a hard time thinking it is not part of the fallen world, pre or post Jesus. It was God who completely wiped out his creation with a flood. Certainly creation did and does deserve it, but God’s response was a violent one. Jesus said If your right hand offends you, cut it off. That is a fairly violent solution. Post garden, blood and death are always present and seemingly necessary for life. Not sure what I think about this - maybe this is just one more paradigm I am not ready to shift!

  3. Mavis - of course it is a cop out! ;) What confuses you?

Janet - thanks for letting me mess with one more of your paradigms. :) I agree that we are apart of a fallen world, however, I would say that as part of the church we are to witness to the Kingdom of God (on earth as it is in heaven). Meaning that we are to live out the way it is supposed to be and not just buy into the way the powers of this world deal with conflict. It seems to me that Jesus speaks often about “loving enemies”, “turning cheeks” and “living by the sword only to die by the sword”.

I know that only address the Jesus issue briefly and doesn’t touch the whole can of worms that is the violence in the OT. Greg does spend many of his recent post dealing with it if you have the time.
