On Taxes - It is actually suprisingly easy to live below the poverty line. Even though it is pretty low. I have done so all my life, and my brother and his family (3 kids) do so as well.

On clothes - some friends and I made a commitment to buy as much as possable, clothes that are already used (there are tones of consignment stores here). Purchasing at these stores not only benifits me (price wise) but many of these shops give the money they make to charity, and the clothing can go back into these stores for someone else, when I'm done with them.

There's a couple of good programs for folks getting out of prison- especially Boaz & Ruth and OAR. For folks still locked up, I'm not so sure. Although I do know the current city jail chaplain- Father Alonzo Pruitt, who's the priest at St. Phillip's Episcopal. He's definitely a champion for social justice. I recommend talking to him if you're interested in prison ministry.

There was probably a time when being 'Christian' really meant a radical difference. They were not free to worship their understanding of god, (being fed to lions and what not) and the state religion was to worship the Emperor as god.

I have heard that in places like China, Africa and others where there is opposition the Christians are strong. Again in North America where we are privileged and free there is none. Some people need opposition to thrive I think...some people do not, maybe they were raised to be loving and giving to everyone, and it stuck with them. Some temperaments in general naturally think of other people, it's in their make up from birth. Religion seems to have very little to do with it.

When I was complaining about Christians once and how there is so many claims to being giving and loving, but don't seem to live it, a Christian friend of mine said to me "When an angry person becomes a Christian, they become an angry Christian."

When I think of Jerry Falwell, I just think that he needs to see a good psychologist and start taking some serious medication...he's way too delusional to be playing with a full deck.
